Breakthrough COVID-19 Cases

After a summer of news stories about people testing positive after vaccination, federal data released today shed light on how common these cases were, how severe they became, and who was most vulnerable.

Overall, fully vaccinated people had a far lower chance of testing positive for the virus or dying from it throughout the summer’s delta surge and loosening of epidemic restrictions in many areas of the country, according to the data. However, immunity against infection appears to be gradually decreasing in vaccinated individuals, even as vaccines maintain their effectiveness against severe illness and death.
