Post-COVID psychosis is still a new diagnosis and there are many unknown of growing evidence. This psychosis is seen within months of infection and is marked by hallucinations, delusions as well as strong negative feelings (fear/anxiety).
As we go into over a year in this virus and evidence shows that the virus may cause long-term effects on the brain and central nervous system. Research on post-COVID psychosis is small but out of 153 patients, 10 experienced new-onset psychosis.
Among theories and research, doctors are considering that COVID-19 causes direct damage to the brain. They state that this “virus triggers an immune response that negatively affects the brain” which may also cause changes in blood flow to the brain.
All of these are factors that affect the brain, the way patients think and feel now due to the virus affecting their brain.
