COVID-19 has has affected millions nationwide. However, for some people who contracted COVID-19 the effects have never subsided. These patients are called COVID Long Haulers. Current estimates are that  30% of COVID survivors are long haulers. Debilitating effects are lasting well beyond six months, sometimes even a year. On top of these symptoms, an increasing number of people are suffering from anxiety or depression related issues. Feelings of being mentally “slow” and just feeling “behind” is something very common amongst COVID Long Haulers. This is known as Brain Fog. The problem is that many patients are being told that they are imagining this and that it is not real. New studies, however, aim to get to the bottom of this.  Researchers are in the initial process of collecting data and hope to have answers soon. COVID-19 is triggering mast cells that are reacting to the virus and creating a hyper-reaction of the immune system, called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). MCAS is a condition in which it affects more than one organ in the body. Mast Cells were first named and discovered in 1878 by German-Jewish Nobel Prize winner, Paul Ehrlich, a man of modern immunology. Mast cell activation syndrome is an immune response that can actually harm the body. Hyper-responsive cells or  over-reacted cells that are usually triggered by a virus can do this to the body. The FDA has approved the drug Ivermectin to treat certain diseases like parasitic worms, lice, but not yet for the prevention of COVID-19. An international group of doctors and scientists says this compound can help with COVID and Long Haulers, but there are side effects to think about.  In the United States, the drug is only dosed to a patient's  weight and more data is needed in order to prescribe it as a drug for COVID-19. More than 2 million people in the United States and the United Kingdom are suffering from long-haulers and while global figures vary, there is a common theory from studies. 14% of people who catch COVID-19 will have lingering symptoms surpassing a year for some. Between 10 and 30% of individuals who are infected with COVID-19 will go on to develop COVID Long Haulers. Even a mild case of COVID-19 can, in some cases, make you quite sick for a long time. Researchers hope that current clinical trials will help them better understand the cause of long COVID, and that further research will provide better treatment options.
