COVID Survivors Struggle With Blood Circulation Disorder

According to a group of cardiologists at the University of California-San Diego, they are seeing a fair amount of COVID-19 survivors with Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, (POTS), a blood circulation disorder. Experts don't have a clear explanation for why COVID-19 long-haulers are exhibiting POTS symptoms. Some professionals believe it’s due to the virus creating inflammation and triggering autonomic antibodies that attack the nervous system. POTS is considered a chronic condition and a variety of medications and therapy exercises can improve the quality of life. Adults and Children Battle With Covid Long Haulers

Dr. Dennis McGorry Jr., the medical director of St. Luke’s, stated that 30% of adulst and children who contracted COVID-19 experience lingering symptoms. The biggest commonality of this experience is the ones who had “mild symptoms” or asymptomatic effects at first, now are experiencing long-lasting ailments.  Even though COVID-19 is seen as a “respiratory infection, McGorry said that this virus creates significant “inflammatory responses” throughout the body. Long Haulers and Side Effects

People recovering from COVID-19 suffer from at least one lingering symptom and recent reviews from the National Institute of Health states that 50-80% of people are suffering from long-COVID or “Long Haulers”.  The symptoms seem to settle after 8-12 weeks, while 10% of cases can linger for six months after testing negative for the virus. Long Haulers appears to be frequent in women and young individuals who are overweight. Canadian COVID-19 Report Reveals Cognitive Impairment

More than 1,000 people in Toronto did a survey that revealed they experienced cognitive impairment for months after their initial COVID-19 infection. This survey was conducted in hopes to support long haulers and to highlight the implications on brain health.  According to the study, more than 70% of people who conducted the survey had to take time off work and another 50% reduce their hours of work. More than 80% said their symptoms have lasted far past three months and nearly half are reporting symptoms lasting 11 months or longer.  The survey shows how COVID-19 can cause neurological damage and how Canada needs to take action on brain health to help survivors from long COVID.
