This Disease Is Different – People Speak on Longhaulers

In Edmonton, a Long-Haul COVID recovery clinic has been dedicated to help people. Doctors have noticed, the symptoms effect patients physically and mentally. Uncovering The Truth: COVID May Change Gene Expression

A new cell study suggests that COVID-19 proteins can bring long-term gene expression changes which would explain why some suffer from long-haulers. COVID-19 is covered in “tiny spike proteins” and during infection, the spike proteins bind with receptors on the cells in patients’ bodies. This begins the process if the virus to release it’s “genetic material” into the inside of the healthy cell.  Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center discovered that exposure to COVID-19 protein alone was enough to change baseline gene expression in airway cells. Researchers found that cultured human airways exposed differentiated in gene expression long after and recovered from exposure and this also included the inflammatory response.

Studies show that PTSD contributes to early onset Dementia, especially if not treated. Due to post traumatic stress induced by the pandemic, many go untreated for PTSD from COVID-19. Important new evidence of how traumatic experiences can impact brain health, and how the long-term effects of trauma may impact the brain in many ways increase the vulnerability to cognitive decline and dementia. While positive cases are two times higher in the Hispanic population with three times the hospitalization rate when compared to the white population. Research to better understand people of color affected is underway and researchers are looking into what causes these lingering problems to predict who is vulnerable to develop the best treatment plans.
