This time Opioid addiction is up for discussion due to the high rate of painkillers being prescribed to patients suffering from “long haulers”. For every 1000 patients known to have “long haulers” 9% of patients received prescriptions for opioids along with 22% received benzodiazepines. Post-COVID psychosis is still a new diagnosis and there are many unknown of growing evidence. This psychosis is seen within months of infection and is marked by hallucinations, delusions as well as strong negative feelings (fear/anxiety). In St. Louis, people suffering from long-haul COVID symptoms are readmitting to hospitals and taking up beds. While at the same time, COVID-19 admissions continue to stream in about 40 per day. Doctors feel the push to have people get vaccinated because the shots have shown 95% protective against symptomatic COVID. A new study found high rates of opioid use among COVID-19 survivors that are suffering from lingering symptoms from the virus. About 10% of survivors develop “long haulers” and doctors have been shown to write more prescriptions for opioids for those suffering from pain, anxiety and other ailments that COVID-19 long-haul symptoms bring to people.  By doing so, we are seeing survivors struggle with addiction with OxyContin, Vicodin, codeine as well as anti-depressants. One of the largest studies of “long haulers” has shown that not only many are suffering from a cluster of health issues within and after infection to actually dying. Survivors has a 59% increased risk of dying within 6 months after contracting the COVID-19 virus.
