Ten to thirty percent of COVID-19 patients become “long haulers” after the virus. The Journal of American Medical Association characterizes the development of long haulers outside the initial infection. The Undersea Oxygen Clinic is conducting research to see if experimental treatments such as hyperbaric oxygen can support those suffering from COVID-19 long haul symptoms. A Texan man was recently released from the hospital a little past 8 months after contracting COVID-19. The patient was first affected last summer and this January received a double lung transplant. Andrew Capen was on life support for months and doctors claims that COVID-19 “essentially destroyed his lungs”. Doctors witnessed Capen’s lungs were severly impacted with scar tissue and inflammation. Doctors at Houston Methodist anticipate there will be more cases dealing with the long-term effects such as lung damage due to COVID-19. People haven’t fully recovered within weeks or even months after contracting the coronavirus. This condition is called “long-haulers” and a medical college in Wisconsin is officially calling this post-acute sequele. An estimate between 10-30% of people who contracted Covid-19 has fallen into post-acute sequele. Nearly one in seven people who tested positive for COVID-19 continued to have symptoms for at least 3 months, according to a United Kingdom Study released 04/01/2021. The Office for National Statistics conducted the study of over 20,000 people who had tested positive fro the virus, from April of 2020 to March of 2021. Survey in the United Kingdom showed an estimate of 1.1 million people were affected in the four weeks of February, starting on the 6th. Out of this survey about twenty percent of people shared of ongoing symptoms that limited their day to day activities significantly. Covid-19 patients are still battling and struggling with symptoms eight months after being infected. Youth and children are not protected either from the debilitating effects of long-haul symptoms. The “Long-Hauler” term and effects are becoming more common as time passes with Covid-19. Several weeks after an initial infection there is a third of the population who contracted the coronavirus still suffering from symptoms. Studies have shown that men do get hit harder by Covid-19 than women, but with the lingering symptoms and effects of the virus tend to effect women more. Women may have harder time recovering from the virus after infection. Researchers from France found that women in Paris suffering from Long-Haulers outnumber men four to one.
