On July 31, it was reported that as many as 17 people have committed suicide in the state of Kerala due to financial crisis caused by the Covid-19 lockdown in the last six weeks. Of these 17 cases, two were double suicides and 50 occurred from June 20 to July 31, out of which 50 were due to financial troubles.
The Planning Board estimates that the government would need Rs.7,300 crores to provide aid to those who are unemployed because of Covid. The transfer would allow anyone who lost their job due to Covid an allowance of Rs.10,000 per month for a period of up to one year.
