One patient is Isabel Claps who is 68 years old and the other is Frank Mignacca, who 35 years old. Both have been declared recovered from COVID-19 but both are still struggling with symptoms. They are part of the estimated of 3.2 million people suffering from post-acute COVID-19 Syndrome, known as Long Haulers. Doctors have not been able to tell them when they will get better. A medical study from Stanford University shows that 1 in 3 COVID-19 survivors are dealing with some type of “brain disorders”. Dr. Joanna Hellmuth, a neurologist from UCSF describes people are having “crushing headaches” as well as severe cognitive symptoms.  Dr. Hellmuth expresses how Long COVID may really impact people and she is seeing this more often in teens. Constant headaches, vertigo and confusion is prevalent and alarming on what the studies are showing in “brain disorders” that are coming after a mild case of COVID-19. There have been several studies that raised concern around those suffering from neurologic and psychiatric complications from COVID-19. These complaints are common within the six months after a diagnosis of COVID. DePaul University conducted a study of 280 Long Haulers and found that while most of the symptoms improved over time, there are still some patients who continue to experience symptoms and even get worse over time. For the study, researchers surveyed two groups about their symptoms; those who suffered from COVID long-haulers and those with ME/CFS (myalgic encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome).  The reason this study was done was due too the fact that many long-haulers experiencing similar symptoms to those with ME/CFS. There are many patients who are still suffering from COVID-19 even after testing negative officially being labeled “recovered”. Some of the most common symptoms are similar to Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome or POTS. POTS is dangerous autonomic nervous system disorder that affects blood flow. “COVID-19 turned the world upside down” and has taken a toll on people’s mental health, including college students. Numerous studies show a spike in depression among college adults due and you can see it in the spike of anti-depression drug refills.  If a college student contracted the virus or not, the pandemic took a toll on shutting down in-person lectures, lack of social activities and straight isolation last year.
