One patient is Isabel Claps who is 68 years old and the other is Frank Mignacca, who 35 years old. Both have been declared recovered from COVID-19 but both are still struggling with symptoms. A medical study from Stanford University shows that 1 in 3 COVID-19 survivors are dealing with some type of “brain disorders”. Dr. Joanna Hellmuth, a neurologist from UCSF describes people are having “crushing headaches” as well as severe cognitive symptoms.  Dr. Hellmuth expresses how Long COVID may really impact people and she is seeing this more often in teens. Brain Fog or Something Else? Getting To The Bottom Of Long Haulers

DePaul University conducted a study of 280 Long Haulers and found that while most of the symptoms improved over time, there are still some patients who continue to experience symptoms and even get worse over time. For the study, researchers surveyed two groups about their symptoms; those who suffered from COVID long-haulers and those with ME/CFS (myalgic encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome).  The reason this study was done was due too the fact that many long-haulers experiencing similar symptoms to those with ME/CFS. Speech Pathology Bringing Relief to COVID Long Haulers?

10-30% percent of COVID-19 patients are labeled “long haulers” and are still feeling the effects of the virus even months after being diagnosed or even "recovered" Two common symptoms are baffling scientists; brain fog and trouble swallowing or chewing food. And scientists can’t figure out how they are related.  What does appear to help treat patients' symptoms, however, is speech therapy!  Megan Luttrell is a speech therapist from Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital and she says that speech pathology work can improve symptoms. She works with patients to perform exercises that may improve memory and organization. COVID Brain Fog Can Last For Months

A third of people who had COVID-19 have developed neuropsychiatric symptoms that have lasted for than six months after their initial diagnosis. The Lancet Psychiatry conducted a study in April and found that these symptoms affect all ages and persist after respiratory symptoms resolve. Some patients experience memory loss, lack of clarity and poor concentration known as brain fog. These COVID survivors state that they have to “work twice as hard for half as much” in everyday life.
