COVID Long Haulers To Be Covered By The ADA?

Thousands of people have recovered from COVID-19, but some are still testing negative and are not feeling any better. It's a condition known as long COVID, which refers to those who are "Long Haulers." According to a University of Washington research, 30% of those who had COVID still had symptoms after six months; according to a study by Imperial College London, almost 15 percent reported three or more issues after 12 weeks. Speech Pathology Bringing Relief to COVID Long Haulers?

10-30% percent of COVID-19 patients are labeled “long haulers” and are still feeling the effects of the virus even months after being diagnosed or even "recovered" Two common symptoms are baffling scientists; brain fog and trouble swallowing or chewing food. And scientists can’t figure out how they are related.  What does appear to help treat patients' symptoms, however, is speech therapy!  Megan Luttrell is a speech therapist from Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital and she says that speech pathology work can improve symptoms. She works with patients to perform exercises that may improve memory and organization. In Las Vegas, professionals are learning that there is a growing concern about the lingering impact on patient’s hearing for those suffering from Covid Long Haulers. This ailment is called tinnitus. Studies show that anywhere between 5-15% of patients will get tinnitus after their infection and 3-8% will have sudden hearing loss.  Even though this might be a small number nationwide, the impact on these patients’ lives is still huge and impairing on their everyday lives. Managing COVID Long Haulers

After contracting COVID-19 people experience both physical and psychological effects. Doctors are now working on a multifaceted approach to treat the long term effects of COVID-19. Currently there is no formal diagnosis of long COVID because symptoms are variable, ranging and associated with varying degrees of autonomic dysfunction. Thus there is limited evidence on how to treat common COVID-19 symptoms. Management of persistent symptoms require multidisciplinary input and primary care. Patients need to be “heard” and taken serious with physical and psychological symptoms from COVID-19. The virus may hinder athletes in different ways. Some may go back to training and experience a full recovery while others are still struggling with symptoms such as fatigue.
