At least 5.2 million children have lost a parent or caretaker to Covid-19, study estimates

Researchers are calling the amount of children who lost a caregiver during Covid-19 “the hidden pandemic.” Further research even suggests that Covid-10 related deaths in Africa are possibly 10x higher than what has been reported. When planning for the future, public health leaders need to keep this in mind as the effects of losing a caregiver increases the risk of poverty, mental health issues, and sexual violence. A part of that plan should include equitable access to vaccines so that no one has to lose a family member again. To read more, click here.

The pandemic has taken a toll on children’s mental health. An expert weighs in

Kids experienced higher levels of anxiety, depression, and other mental health impacts due to school closures and lockdowns. Another study found that the suicide attempt rates amongst adolescent girls increased during the pandemic as well. Parents are urged to look for common signs of their children needing help such as increased crying, more frequent tantrums, and difficulty sleeping. If these signs are noted, speak to a qualified professional. To read more, click here.

As Covid Cases Fall, Biden Says It’s Time to Return to Normal Life

President Biden states that we have made a lot of progress over the past year in regard to COVID-19. Therefore, it is time to return the pre-COVID normal we once lived. Federal and local governments are minimizing their restrictions, and citizens should feel safe returning to their offices. Biden can not say whether a new variant will arise, but he has put plans and initiatives in place should the arise. With his plan, Biden hopes that we will never have to return to the restricted life we once lived during the height of the COVID-19 outbreak. To learn more, click here.

COVID reinfections, sneezing hamsters and huge methane emissions

It has been reported that after the emergence of the Omicron variant that the amount of reinfections has risen sharply. A genomic analysis of viral samples from pet hamsters makes experts believe that the Delta outbreak was caused by a pet store that carried SARS-CoV-2 into Hong Kong. Hamsters are highly susceptible to the virus and can easily transfer it to other rodents and humans. While recent studies support the idea that pet trading contributes greatly to the spread, it is still more likely to be passed from human to human. To read more, click here.

Coronavirus (COVID 19) Update: FDA Takes Multiple Actions to Expand Use of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine

As of 1/03/2022, the FDA amended the emergency use authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in order to expand the use of a single booster dose, shorten the time between vaccine completion and booster, and allow for a third primary series dose. Boosters are now available to those that are 12 years and older. The booster interval is now updated to five months for those that are 12 years and older. All children from the ages of 5 to 11 who are immunocompromised have been approved for a third primary series dose if they fulfill the requirements. The booster dose for the authorized vaccines provide better protection from the delta and omicron variants. Most common side effects after receiving the booster shot is as follows: redness and swelling at the injection site, fatigue, he...

Coronavirus (COVID 19) Update: FDA Limits Use of Certain Monoclonal Antibodies to Treat COVID-19 Due to the Omicron Variant

As new data on COVID-19 emerges, the FDA has revised the authorizations for two monoclonal antibody treatments that are administered together: bamlanivimab and etesevimab. These may only be used when the patient is likely to have already been infected with or exposed to a variant that is susceptible to the aforementioned treatments. Monoclonal antibodies are lab made proteins. COVID-19 can mutate over time, which is why this update is necessary. These treatments do not count as a substitute for getting vaccinated. Data clearly shows that receiving the vaccine along with a booster shot is still the best way to lower the risk of contracting COVID-19 and experiencing the possible life threatening symptoms that come along with it. Omicron might mark the end of Covid-19’s pandemic phase—unless a certain scenario happens, Fauci says

Experts cannot say for sure if the rapid spread of Omicron will make the pandemic more manageable. Omicron is much less likely to cause severe disease, so this makes experts hopeful that the end is near. Schools continue to battle with the surge of Omicron as they switch to virtual learning. One district in Houston Texas closed for one day in order to “mitigate potential exposure” while returning to in-person learning the very next day. The largest school district in the nation will not be returning to virtual learning. On the other hand, some other districts are under fire for their mask mandates. Before new variants emerge, scientists are hard at work developing new vaccines. To learn more, click here.

COVID is here to stay: countries must decide how to adapt.

As new variants arise, the healthcare system continues to be overwhelmed. Vaccines and boosters were not able to be implemented soon enough to avoid the surmounting cases. COVID continues to leave hospitals understaffed, forcing children to engage in remote learning, and limit travel opportunities. Countries must accept that COVID-19 is not going anywhere, and they must create an action plan to handle all that the virus comes with. With the evidence of more variants emerging, there is added urgency to distribute supplies to countries that lack them. It is clear that the virus will continue to circulate. Now, we must rely more heavily on the advice of scientists. To learn more, click here.

Montana Give Hope To COVID Long Haulers

COVID patients are still reporting strange smells or tastes, persistently low oxygen levels, severe brain fog, memory loss, heart irregularities, digestive difficulties, and limb numbness or burning 10 years after treatment. Even mental and emotional anguish, rash, hair loss, and numerous additional symptoms linked to multiple organ systems have been recognized as constant worry following a COVID infection. In Montana, doctors at Benefis Hospital's Post COVID Recovery Program in Great Falls look for a variety of factors when examining medical history during intake appointments for COVID long-haulers, a growing group of patients who have symptoms that persist beyond 12 weeks after the initial infection.
